Skip the Sunday Scaries, Teachers

Skip the Sunday Scaries, Teachers

Build A Better Tribe with AI

This past weekend, my husband David and I had a fun weekend away from DC, exploring Norfolk and Virginia Beach.

As we made the 4-hour drive home on Sunday afternoon, I thought about how, for years, when I was a classroom teacher, Sundays were often the most stressful day of the week for me.

I would often spend the day asking and answering questions like:

Are my lesson plans done?

Do I have all the supplies for the things I’m teaching this week?

Will the student who needs extra support in learning about fractions finally grasp the concept this week?

Even years later, when I worked as a school principal, questions like this and so many others made me a participant in what people in education affectionately refer to as “The Sunday Scaries“. Basically, it’s when your body and mind feel pre-stressed for the week, anticipating and dreading what is to come.

But what if there was another way?

I’m Obsessed with Teaching Others How to Move from Burnout to Bliss…But the Question is How?

Since I have transitioned out of my life as a school principal, I have now dedicated my life to helping teachers get out of the toxic cycle of burnout, so they can get back to the joy of teaching. Enter AI.

Empowering educators with the power of AI to enhance their teaching and help them have a few less scary Sundays.

“Uh-Oh, AI is Gross!”

Ok, time to talk about the elephant in the room.

In a future blog, I will further address the very real dangers that exist in using AI.

This is exactly why I train teachers not only how to use AI ethically and appropriately, but also how to teach their students to be good digital citizens.

Years ago, I attended a tech conference where the author & educator George Couros said something like this (forgive me George for the paraphrase – it’s been years!),

“When we don’t teach our children how to use social media and technology appropriately, it doesn’t erase the problem. It’s like us throwing them in the ocean, and expecting them to magically know how to swim.

And our kids are drowning.”

Here’s the thing.

AI is here.

It’s growing exponentially,

it’s transforming everything around us, and if we’re not using it, ask yourself, how will we have a voice when laws and structure is being built around it?

Ok, I’ll get off my pulpit.

Let’s get more granular.

Below, I give you 3 real-life examples of “Sunday Scary” situations that I have experienced as a teacher or when I was a principal, and an AI prompt that you can personalize and stick into your favorite platform, perhaps Claude, ChatGPT, or Gemini.

But whichever you choose doesn’t matter!

Just see what you get.

Scenario 1: The “Overwhelmed Inbox” Moment

The Scene: You open your email on Sunday night to find a long message from a concerned parent worried that their child is falling behind on homework. You want to be supportive and clear, but your brain is already fried from the weekend.

COPY & PASTE THIS PROMPT: “I am a [Grade Level] teacher. I need to draft a professional, empathetic, and supportive email response to a parent who is concerned about their child falling behind on homework. Please provide a draft that acknowledges their concerns, suggests a brief plan for a check-in, and maintains a partnership-focused tone. Keep the response under 150 words.”

Integrity Tip: Never paste the parent’s original email or the student’s full name into the AI. Use placeholders like “Student A” or “my child” to keep all records private and secure.

Scenario 2: The “Let’s Teach This Again” Lesson

The Scene: You taught fractions last week, but the blank stares across the room told you everything you needed to know: they didn’t get it. Now you have to reteach the concept tomorrow without losing their engagement (or your sanity).

COPY & PASTE THIS PROMPT: “I am teaching [Grade Level] math. My students are struggling to understand the concept of [Specific Concept, e.g., equivalent fractions]. Can you provide three creative, hands-on, and simple ‘reteach’ activity ideas that use common classroom objects? Also, include a 2-minute ‘hook’ to grab their attention at the start of the lesson.”

Integrity Tip: AI is a great co-planner, but you are the expert on your students. Always review the math problems the AI generates to ensure they are factually accurate and aligned with your specific state standards before handing them out.

Scenario 3: The “These Kids Are Bored” Planning Time

The Scene: You want to make your lessons more fun and engaging this week… but your brain is tired, and you don’t even know where to start.

COPY AND PASTE THIS PROMPT: “Give me 5 fun, low-prep classroom activities to increase engagement for [grade level + subject]. Each activity should take under 20 minutes, require minimal materials, and align with common classroom learning goals.”

FOR EXTRA HELP: Attach your lesson plan for the week in ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, or whatever you’re using, and ask it to refer to the lesson plan to add an interactive activity to one subject, like science or writing.

Ethical Tip: Use AI for ideas and inspiration—but always review and adapt activities to fit your students, your standards, and your professional judgment.

Listen — I am not here to tell you that AI is a magic wand that will make teaching easy. But I am here to tell you that it can be a really powerful tool in your back pocket, one that helps you work smarter, breathe a little deeper, and maybe — just maybe — enjoy your Sunday again.

You became a teacher because you love students and you love learning. AI, when used wisely and ethically, can help you get back to that — the joy, the creativity, the reason you started. So the next time the Sunday Scaries start creeping in, open up your favorite AI platform, try one of these prompts, and see what happens.

You might just surprise yourself.
