By February, many educators feel stuck.
The honeymoon period is long over. Winter behaviors are peaking. Patience is thin. And the pressure to “tighten things up” is real.
Here’s what I know from years as a teacher and principal:
Correction without connection doesn’t create lasting change.
Why Behavior Spikes Mid-Year
By February:
- Students are tired
- Teachers are tired
- Systems feel rigid instead of supportive
Behavior is communication. And often, it’s asking for a connection.
What Connection Looks Like (Practically)
Connection doesn’t mean lowering expectations. It means strengthening relationships.
Simple strategies:
- Greet students by name (every day, if possible)
- Use check-in questions
- Offer choices when appropriate
- Acknowledge effort—not just outcomes
Students who feel seen are more willing to engage.
How Families Fit Into the Picture
When families understand that behavior is communication, they can support without shame.
Encourage caregivers to:
- Ask curious questions instead of assuming defiance
- Share context with teachers
- Reinforce routines at home
Schools thrive when adults stay aligned.
A Better Tribe Mindset
A Better Tribe believes:
- Belonging precedes learning
- Discipline should be restorative, not punitive
- Relationships are the foundation of success
February is the perfect time to re-center connection.
Your students don’t need harsher systems.
They need steadier adults.
