I spent many years as an elementary teacher and then principal. Hands down, my favorite and most inspiring thing to teach was beginning reading. Books open up a whole new world to children, and having diverse books that represent all children is a powerful way to help children develop dream!
In honor of Black History Month, I would love to share a handful of fantastic books that I love for children, and that I think would be a wonderful addition to any home or classroom library.
I absolutely love books with positive messages and positive mantras for children to read! Insert “I Am Amazing,” an upbeat book about a young boy overcoming a discouraging situation.
One of my favorite things as a teacher was to create mini-units where we can explore powerful themes such as “courage” and “resilience”. This book is a great book to use to discuss how to reframe tough situations. Even the youngest children can understand the concept of a “bad day”, and this book is a great way to springboard conversations about bouncing back.
I have loved Vashti Harrison’s artistry ever since I started following her on Instagram about five or six years ago. She is incredibly talented and has a way of celebrating beauty and curiosity through the eyes of little black children.
The illustrations are beautiful, vivid, and bright. And the message of this book is so inspiring!
